So your friend had their baby and you want to come celebrate with a gift. Choosing a newborn gift can be tough, especially if you don’t have kids or haven’t had babies around the house in awhile. You could go with the classics: baby swaddles, blankets, and stuffed animals. These are always good choices since you don't need to know about sizing or style preferences. No new parents would ever refuse a gift outfit, of course.
Perhaps you’re looking for a different type of gift? One that isn't wrapped in a bow? Here's three great gift ideas for new moms that they'll be sure to appreciate!
Time is a very valuable thing when you’ve got a newborn in the house. The common advice to “sleep when the baby sleeps” is great in theory, but it’s much harder when you’ve also got dishes or laundry to keep up with. Want to really help your new parent friends? Do a load of laundry, or wash the dishes in the sink! The simple things can be huge, especially when their life feels like chaos.
Naturally, you want to spend time with your friends and their new baby. They, however, may not have the energy for socialization. If you make them a dinner, or drop off baby clothes and supplies, it’s just as appreciated when you drop it simply drop it off, say bye and leave. Sticking around to chat may be nice, but it can be hard for them if they're also distracted with their responsibilities and sleep-deprived. I promise that new parents still want to be your friend, they're just tired! If you’re willing to help out by dropping something off and heading on your way, that might be the best thing you can do for them.
If your new parent friends have other kids, then volunteering to babysit can be a lifesaver! Perhaps you take their kids out for a day trip rather than bringing them home. Even a few hours with the kids away from home let those new parents get some much needed peace and quiet. You could keep their kids busy and entertained at a museum or zoo, depending on the weather. There's also community centers, arcades, jump parks and other activities for kids.
Gifts can be hard to find and hard to give, so hopefully you got a few good ideas for what might be worth the time and effort to get.
