Travel Tips for Enjoying Spring Break Vacation with the Kids

by Elizabeth Lewis

I realize that not everyone is going to feel comfortable traveling this year, but if you do plan on traveling for spring break with your family, here’s some tips.

#1: Keep The Kids Entertained!

First things first: keeping the kids entertained while traveling. We covered a similar topic on our blog before. Getting through long car rides without relying on screens, which can be read here.

Here’s my biggest tip for keeping kids entertaining during travel: plan and pack some surprises. Kids will find trips to be a lot more interesting when there are unforeseen activities or snacks. They'll be more excited, and it doesn’t really matter what you packed. It's all about the presentation of a surprise or gift.

#2: Plan Your Time Ahead

Plan ahead, but expect some changes. Get the kids involved in the planning and you'll know for sure what they will be excited for. Having a vague idea of what everyone wants to do will make your life will be much easier. You don't have to plan out every single minute, but it doesn’t hurt to have some sort of an outline of your day(s). Try not to get stressed if the day goes off-plan. It's better for everyone when you are setting the example by going with the flow.

#3: Check the Weather Beforehand

Depending on how, where, and when you travel--packing can be a nightmare. My biggest piece of advice is to check the weather as often as you can. It may sound obvious and the weather predictions aren't perfect, but I will speak from experience when I tell you that it’s vital. I did a family trip one year where we went to Florida and my son packed his winter coat. I was so angry at him until it turned out to be around 30 degrees for much of the trip.

#4: Try On Clothes Before You Leave

Do yourself a huge favor and make sure any special clothes you packed still fit. This could include coats for colder weather, swimsuits for the pool, or warm weather clothing. The last thing you want is to get to the hotel pool only to find out that the swimsuit from last year is too small!

If you do find something is too small and need clothes, just remember that The Plaid Giraffe has plenty to choose from! Swimsuits, t-shirts, and everything in-between!

#5: Less Stress is Best

The last thing to remember is that the more stressed you get, the more stressed everyone else gets. Kids are a lot more perceptive of stress and worry than you may think. It’s not going to be perfect, and that’s okay! You deserve a vacation too, so take a deep breath, and remember that everything is going to be fine. Trust me.
